Spermophilus
A genus of ground squirrel. S. beecheyi, S. grammurus, S. pygmaeus, S. townsendi, and several other species act as an important reservoir of Yersinia pestis.

Sper·moph·i·lus (spər-mofґĭ-ləs) a genus of ground squirrels (family Sciuridae) that harbor organisms transmissible to humans. S. beeґcheyi is a species of California that is often infected with plague; also, it and the species S. molґlis of Utah and S. oregoґnus of Oregon are natural reservoirs of Francisella tularensis.
