Pro·tis·ta (pro-tisґtə) [Gr. prōtista the very first, from prōtos first] in the five-kingdom classification of living organisms, a kingdom comprising a diverse group of phylogenically distinct, unicellular eukaryotes, including protozoa, algae, and certain intermediate forms.
