phys·iat·ry (fiz″e-atґre) [physi- + -iatry] the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease or injury, and the rehabilitation from resultant impairments and disabilities, using physical agents such as light, heat, cold, water, electricity, therapeutic exercise, and mechanical apparatus, and sometimes pharmaceutical agents. Called also physiatrics and physical medicine. See also rehabilitation (def. 2).
