6-phosphofructokinase

Phosphofructokinase I; an enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of d-fructose 6-phosphate by ATP (or other NTP) to fructose 1,6-bisphosphate and ADP (or other NDP); this enzyme catalyzes a step in glycolysis; it is inhibited by elevated levels of either ATP or citrate; a deficiency of this enzyme can lead to hemolytic anemia. 6-phos·pho·fruc·to·ki·nase (fos″fo-frook″to-kiґnās) [EC 2.7.1.11] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the phosphorylation of fructose 6-phosphate by ATP to form fructose 1,6-bisphosphate. The reaction is essentially irreversible and is a committed step and a key site of regulation in the Embden-Meyerhof pathway of glucose metabolism. Numerous isozymes occur; deficiency of the muscle isoenzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, is the cause of glycogen storage disease, type VII. Called also phosphofructokinase 1.
