phosphagen

phosphagen
Energy-rich guanidinium or amidine phosphate, serving as an energy store in muscle and brain; e.g., phosphocreatine in mammals, phosphoarginine in invertebrates. Other phosphagens include phosphoagmatine, phosphoglycocyamine, and phospholombricine.

phos·pha·gen (fosґfə-jən) any of a group of high energy compounds that are substituted derivatives of phosphoguanidine; they act as reservoirs of phosphate bond energy, donating phosphoryl groups to phosphorylate ADP when ATP levels are low. Phosphocreatine is the phosphagen of vertebrates.
