Or·tho·reo·vi·rus (or″tho-reґo-vi″rəs) [ortho- + respiratory enteric orphan + virus] a genus of viruses of the family Reoviridae, formerly classed as echoviruses, separable into three serotypes. No causative relationship to any disease has been proved in humans, although reoviruses have been isolated from both healthy individuals and patients with a variety of diseases. In other mammals reoviruses are associated with respiratory and enteric disease, and in chickens and turkeys, with arthritis.
