- A generalized disease in humans and other animals caused by Nocardia asteroides, N. otitidiscaviarum, N. transvalensis, and N. brasiliensis and characterized by primary pulmonary lesions that may be subclinical or chronic with hematogenous spread, to deep viscera, including the central nervous system; most commonly occurs in immunosuppressed patients. SYN: nocardiasis.- granulomatous n. a form of n. characterized by emaciation, abdominal distention, and replacement of lymphoid tissue in lymph node s and spleen by granulomatous tissue.

no·car·di·o·sis (no-kahr″de-oґsis) infection with a species of Nocardia, usually N. asteroides, but occasionally N. brasiliensis, N. farcinica, or N. otitidiscaviarum. There is usually an acute or chronic suppurative lung infection (pulmonary n.) with abscesses, but there is a marked tendency to spread to other organs such as the brain, skin, or subcutaneous tissues, sometimes with a fatal outcome.
