An analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory nonsteroidal agent used in the management of rheumatoid arthritis and in the treatment of osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and gout. It is also used to produce closure of a patent ductus arteriosus in infants.

in·do·meth·a·cin (in″do-methґə-sin) [USP] a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug; used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute gouty arthritis, other rheumatic and nonrheumatic inflammatory conditions, and dysmenorrhea, and the treatment and prophylaxis of vascular headaches; administered orally or rectally. It is also applied topically to the conjunctiva to prevent miosis during cataract surgery and to reduce the severity and occurrence of postoperative cystoid macular edema.
