Indole alkaloid of the iboga group. Obtained from several parts of the African shrub Tabernanthe iboga (family Apocynaceae). Used by African hunters to arrest movement of the hunter; hallucinogenic, antidepressant, and euphoric.

ibo·ga·ine (i-boґgə-ēn) an alkaloid from the root of Tabernanthe iboga Baill. (Apocynaceae) that has antidepressant and euphoric properties; it has been used investigationally as an aid to withdrawal symptoms in the treatment of drug addiction.
