- A condition due to diminished activity of the anterior lobe of the hypophysis, with inadequate secretion, to varying degrees, of one or more anterior pituitary hormones.

hy·po·pi·tu·i·ta·rism (hi″po-pĭ-tooґĭ-tə-riz″əm) diminution or cessation of function of the adenohypophysis due to surgical removal, to ablation by irradiation, or to spontaneous causes, as in chromophobe adenoma or postpartum necrosis (Sheehan syndrome). There is variable deficiency of hormones, including: gonadotropins (causing secondary hypogonadism); somatotropin (causing pituitary dwarfism in children); thyrotropin (causing secondary hypothyroidism); and corticotropin (causing secondary adrenocortical insufficiency).
