A quinoline derivative; an antimalarial agent whose actions and uses resemble those of chloroquine phosphate; also used in the treatment of lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.

hy·droxy·chlo·ro·quine sul·fate (hi-drok″se-klorґo-kwin) [USP] a 4-aminoquinoline compound with antiprotozoal and antiinflammatory properties, used for suppression and treatment of malaria, for suppression of lupus erythematosus, and as an antiinflammatory disease-modifying antirheumatic drug in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis; administered orally.
