het·er·oph·a·gy (het″ər-ofґə-je) [hetero- + -phagy] the taking into a cell of exogenous material by phagocytosis or pinocytosis, and digestion of the ingested material after fusion of the newly formed vacuole with a lysosome. Cf. autophagy.
