he·mo·chrome (heґmo-krōm) [hemo- + -chrome] a heme compound in which the fifth and sixth coordination positions of the central iron atom are occupied by strong field ligands, usually nitrogen atoms, as in cytochromes; originally a complex of 2 moles of a nitrogenous base per mole of heme. Called also hemochromogen.
