An enzyme in kidney and other tissues that catalyzes the hydrolysis of l-glutamine to ammonia and l-glutamic acid; an important enzyme for urinary ammonia formation.

glu·tam·i·nase (gloo-tamґĭ-nās) [EC 3.5.1.2] an enzyme of the hydrolase class that catalyzes the deamination of glutamine to form glutamate and ammonium ions; most of the latter are converted to urea via the urea cycle.
