glu·cu·ron·o·syl·trans·fer·ase (gloo″ku-ron″o-səl-transґfər-ās) [EC 2.4.1.17] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the transfer of a glucuronate moiety from UDP-glucuronate to an acceptor to form a glucuronide conjugate. The reaction occurs with a wide range of substrates and is important in the conversion of bilirubin to its more soluble glucuronide conjugates, which are then secreted into the bile. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, results in Crigler-Najjar syndrome.
