a volatile oil that has a mild irritant effect on the mucous membranes of the mouth and digestive system. It is taken as pastilles or inhaled as vapour to relieve catarrh. Large doses may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

eu·ca·lyp·tol (u″kə-lipґtol) [USP] a colorless liquid with a camphoraceous odor and a cooling, pungent taste, obtained from eucalyptus oil and other sources, used as a flavoring agent, expectorant, and local antiseptic. Called also cajeputol and cineol.
