The betaine of a sulfur-containing derivative of histidine, present in blood and other mammalian tissue and in ergot. SYN: thiolhistidylbetaine, thioneine.

er·go·thi·o·ne·ine (ur″go-thi″o-neґin) the trimethylbetaine of thiolhistidine, originally found in ergot and later isolated from human blood; it occurs in abnormal amounts in the urine of cancer patients; called also erythrothioneine, thiazine, and thioneine.
