Di·no·fla·gel·li·da (di″no-flə-jelґĭ-də) [Gr. dinos + L. flagellum whip] an order of plantlike protozoa of the phylum Dinoflagellata; when organisms are present in sea water in vast numbers (causing a discoloration known as red tide), they deplete the oxygen supply, causing marine animals and fish to die. Some species secrete saxitoxin; human consumption of shellfish that have ingested these species can result in neurotoxic or paralytic shellfish poisoning.
