- A histologic type of epithelial neoplasm, frequently malignant, characterized by islands of neoplastic cells embedded in a hyalinized stroma which may represent a thickened basement membrane; may form from ducts of glands, especially in salivary glands, skin, and bronchi; in the salivary glands, also termed adenoid cystic carcinoma. cyl·in·dro·ma (sil″in-droґmə) [cylinder + -oma] 1. a type of benign adnexal tumor, thought to be of sweat gland tissue, usually on the scalp (see turban tumor), but occasionally on the face or limbs. It consists of single or multiple nodules with cylindrical epithelial masses containing small basophilic and larger pale-staining cells surrounded by pink hyaline sheaths.
