Concussion
A traumatic injury to tissues of the body such as the brain as a result of a violent blow, shaking, or spinning. For information specifically about concussion of the brain, please also see Concussion of the brain.

1. A violent shaking or jarring. 2. An injury of a soft structure, as the brain, resulting from a blow or violent shaking. SYN: commotio. [L. concussio, fr. con- cutio, pp. -cussus, to shake violently]
- brain c. a clinical syndrome due to mechanical, usually traumatic, forces; characterized by immediate and transient impairment of neural function, such as alteration of consciousness, disturbance of vision and equilibrium, etc. SYN: commotio cerebri.

- spinal cord c. injury to the spinal cord due to a blow to the vertebral column with transient or prolonged dysfunction below the level of the lesion. SYN: spinal c..

2) a condition resulting from the stunning, damaging, or shattering effects of a hard blow esp a jarring injury of the brain resulting in disturbance of cerebral function and sometimes marked by permanent damage

n.
a condition caused by injury to the head, characterized by headache, confusion, and amnesia. These symptoms may be prolonged and constitute a post-concussional syndrome. There may be no recognizable structural damage to the brain, but scans may reveal evidence of contusion (bruising) within the brain. Repeated concussion eventually causes symptoms suggesting brain damage. See also punch-drunk syndrome.
