the removal of a sample of fetal blood by inserting a hollow needle through the abdominal wall of a pregnant woman, under ultrasound guidance, into the umbilical vein. The blood is subjected to chromosome analysis and bio-chemical and other tests to determine the presence of abnormalities. See also prenatal diagnosis.

cor·do·cen·te·sis (kor″do-sen-teґsis) [cordo- + -centesis] percutaneous puncture of the umbilical vein under ultrasonographic guidance to obtain a fetal blood sample. Called also percutaneous umbilical blood sampling.
