zone of inhibition

zone of inhibition
in the disk diffusion test, the area in which an antimicrobial agent inhibits growth of the isolate being tested; beyond that area, the concentration of the agent in the medium is insufficient for inhibition of bacterial growth. See illustration.

Zones of inhibition in disk diffusion test of a bacterial isolate. Each of the antimicrobial agents tested, except the two at the upper right, is surrounded by a zone of some diameter in which there is inhibition of bacterial growth; the isolate is thus susceptible to these agents. The absence of zones of inhibition around the two agents tested at the upper right edge of the plate indicates the isolate is resistant to them.
