1. in a tracing of the venous pulse, a positive deflection representing contraction of the right atrium, occurring just prior to the carotid arterial pulse and first heart sound. See also illustration at pulse. 2. in the electroretinogram, the small negative deflection occurring after stimulus presentation, related to the photoreceptor processes of the rods and cones. 3. in the apexcardiogram, a small positive deflection in late diastole, coinciding with the third heart sound; it represents the passage of blood into the left ventricle as a result of atrial systole.
