- [TA] lateral ventricle of brain: the cavity in each cerebral hemisphere, derived (developed) from the cavity of the embryonic neural tube; it consists of a central part or body (pars centralis) and three horns: the frontal horn (cornu frontale), temporal horn (cornu temporale), and occipital horn (cornu occipitale) in the frontal, temporal, and occipital lobes, respectively. The body and occipital and temporal horns meet at the atrium of the lateral ventricle. The two lateral ventricles are separated from each other by the septum pellucidum, and each communicates with the third ventricle by an interventricular foramen, through which the choroid plexuses of the lateral ventricles become continuous with that of the third ventricle; these foramina also allow cerebrospinal fluid formed in the lateral ventricle to flow into the third ventricle. Called also lateral cerebral ventricle.
