upa·dha·tu (oo″pə-thŭґtoo) [Sanskrit upa above + dhatu to support] according to ayurveda, secondary, temporary tissue that arises from the metabolism and waste of primary tissues (dhatus); for example, feces provide temporary strength and structure to the colon and sweat lubricates the skin.
