cleis·to·the·ci·um (klīs″to-theґse-əm) [Gr. kleisis a closing + theca] the fruiting body (ascocarp) produced by certain ascomycetes, in which there is no pore for the escape of ascospores, the spores being released by rupture or decay of the body. Cf. apothecium, gymnothecium, and perithecium.
