- [TA] supraopticohypophysial tract: the group of fibers of the hypothalamicohypophysial tract arising in the supraoptic nucleus; some of the fibers descend to end in the infundibulum and others reach the neurohypophysis (posterior pituitary), where their neurosecretory material is stored as vasopressin before being released into the systemic circulation. The term has also been used to denote either the entire set of fibers of the hypothalamicohypophysial tract entering the infundibulum without regard to point of termination, or only the parts of that tract that arise in the supraoptic nucleus and the paraventricular nucleus (see t. paraventriculohypophysialis).
