subacute granulomatous thyroiditis
a condition characterized by fever and painful enlargement of the thyroid gland, often following a viral infection, especially of the respiratory tract, with granulomas in the gland consisting of masses of colloid surrounded by giant cells and mononuclear cells, and a moderate amount of fibrosis. Called also de Quervain, giant cell, granulomatous, or pseudotuberculous t.
