highly active antiretroviral therapy
(HAART) the aggressive use of extremely potent antiretroviral agents in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus infection; it generally includes three such agents, two of which are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and the other either an HIV protease inhibitor or a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor.
