chy·mo·pa·pain (ki″mo-pə-pānґ) [EC 3.4.22.6] an enzyme of the hydrolase class, a cysteine endopeptidase, that catalyzes the hydrolysis of proteins and polypeptides. Its specificity is very close to that of papain and both occur in the latex of the tropical papaya tree, Carica papaya. The enzyme is used to break down the proteoglycan portion of the nucleus pulposus in the treatment of herniation of intervertebral (lumbar) disks by chemonucleolysis.
