- A genus of bacteria containing Gram-negative, motile rods. These microorganisms produce a violet pigment (violacein) and are occasionally pathogenic to humans and other animals. The type species is C. violaceum.

Chro·mo·bac·te·ri·um (kro″mo-bak-tērґe-əm) [chromo- + bacterium] a genus of gram-negative, aerobic or facultatively anaerobic, usually nonpathogenic, rod-shaped bacteria of the family Neisseriaceae, found in soil and water in tropical countries, characteristically producing violet pigment that is soluble in alcohol but not in water or chloroform. The type species is C. violaґceum.
