group A B C (etc.) streptococci
streptococci distinguished by the Lancefield classification into groups (Lancefield groups) on immunologic grounds according to the presence in the cell wall of specific antigenic carbohydrates called C carbohydrates. Those causing human infection are found primarily in groups A through G.
