cerebral steal

cerebral steal
subclavian steal in occlusive disease of the subclavian artery, a reversal of blood flow in the ipsilateral vertebral artery from the basilar artery to the subclavian artery beyond the point of occlusion; this may deprive the brain of blood and cause the subclavian steal syndrome.

Symptomatic congenital subclavian steal in a 21-year-old man. (A), Arteriogram of early phase shows right aortic arch (Rt Ao Arch) from which arise a right subclavian artery (RSCA), right carotid artery (RCA), right vertebral artery (R Vert A), and left carotid artery (LCA). The left subclavian artery (LSCA) is conspicuously absent. (B), Subsequent phase shows LSCA filling from the left vertebral artery (L Vert A). Intercost A, Intercostal artery. (C), Later phase shows further filling of LSCA from L Vert A.
