sinuses of dura mater

sinuses of dura mater
sinus durae matris [TA] large venous channels forming an anastomosing system between the layers of the cranial dura mater. They are devoid of valves, do not collapse when drained, and in some parts contain trabeculae. They drain the cerebral veins and some diploic and meningeal veins into the veins of the neck. Those at the base of the skull also drain most of the blood from the orbit. In some places they communicate with superficial veins by small emissary vessels. Called also cranial s's, s. venosi durales, and venous s's of dura mater.
