Hoover sign
1. in the normal state or in genuine paralysis, if the supine patient is directed to press the whole lower limb against the surface, there will be a lifting movement in the opposite limb; this phenomenon is absent in hysteria and malingering. Called also Grasset-Gaussel-Hoover s. 2. movement of the costal margins toward the midline during inhalation, occurring bilaterally in pulmonary emphysema and unilaterally in conditions causing flattening of the diaphragm, such as pleural effusion and pneumothorax.
