inferior petrosal sinus sampling
- inferior petrosal sinus sampling
- (IPSS) a test for the cause of Cushing syndrome: catheters are inserted into the inferior petrosal sinuses and venous blood is withdrawn and analyzed for its levels of corticotropin; this is then compared with corticotropin levels in the patient's peripheral blood. If the ratio of central to peripheral corticotropin is above 3.0, the Cushing syndrome is of central origin (Cushing disease), usually from a pituitary adenoma.
