ribose-phosphate pyrophosphokinase
- ribose-phosphate pyrophosphokinase
- ri·bose-phos·phate py·ro·phos·pho·ki·nase (riґbōs fosґfāt pi″ro-fos″fo-kiґnās) [EC 2.7.6.1] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the phosphorylation of ribose 5-phosphate to form 5-phosphoribosyl-1-pyrophosphate, the initial reactant in purine and pyrimidine nucleotide biosynthesis. Enhanced enzyme activity, an X-linked recessive trait, leads to increased purine synthesis and causes primary gout. Called also phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase. In official nomenclature, the preferred name is now ribose-phosphate diphosphokinase.
