nucleotide excision repair
- nucleotide excision repair
- (NER) repair of bulky lesions introduced into DNA by damage, such as that induced by ultraviolet light; at least 30 proteins are involved and the process consists of recognition of the lesion, strand separation at the site, single strand incision on both sides of the lesion with excision of the lesion-containing single-stranded fragment, and DNA synthesis and ligation to fill and close the gap. It comprises two subpathways that differ in their recognition of DNA damage: global genome repair and transcription-coupled repair (qq.v.).
