acute rejection

acute rejection
acute cellular rejection the classic type of graft rejection, occurring 1 to 3 weeks after transplantation or following a cessation of immunosuppressive therapy and resulting primarily from the cell-mediated immune response of the recipient against incompatible human leukocyte antigens; it is manifested histologically as extensive infiltration of the graft by mononuclear cells, primarily small lymphocytes, accompanied by edema and interstitial hemorrhage.

Renal histology showing acute rejection. Small lymphocytes and other cells are infiltrating (I) the interstitium of the graft. (G), glomerulus.
