standardized mortality ratio

standardized mortality ratio
(SMR) the ratio of the number of observed deaths in a study population to the number of expected deaths in that population. The expected deaths are calculated by classifying the study group by demographic variables such as age, sex, or race; computing the expected deaths for each class by multiplying the number of individuals in the study group in that class by the class-specific death rate in a standard reference population; and adding the expected deaths in all classes. Cf. proportionate mortality r. (def. 2).
