cardiothoracic ratio

cardiothoracic ratio
the ratio of the transverse diameter of the heart to the internal diameter of the chest at its widest point just above the level of the dome of the diaphragm, such as on radiographic examination; it is a rough guide to cardiac enlargement, being normally less than 0.5. Called also cardiothoracic index.
