high mobility group proteins
- high mobility group proteins
- HMG proteins a highly conserved family of small nonhistone nucleoproteins that bind DNA and are involved in controlling transcription. They are important for growth and development, and are regulated by cell cycle–dependent phosphorylation. Those from animals have been classified in three families: HMG-1/2, HMG-14/17 and HMG-I/Y. Members of the HMG-1/2 family contain a conserved motif known as the HMG box (q.v.), which is also found in a variety of other transcription factors.
