second set phenomenon

second set phenomenon
the accelerated and intensified rejection by the recipient of a second graft of tissue from the same donor as a consequence of the primary immune response (i.e., antibody production and cell-mediated immunity) induced by the first graft. Called also second set rejection.

Second set phenomenon of a human skin allograft in which the graft has been rejected before it has had time to heal. After a first graft is initially vascularized at day 5 (A) and then destroyed by day 12 (B), a second graft from the same donor is not vascularized and is rejected rapidly, by day 7 (C).
