- streptococcal pharyngitis
- an acute variety caused by infection with Streptococcus pyogenes; it occurs in epidemics and is usually spread by droplets or in air, although it can also be spread by direct contact and in food. Characteristics include intense local hyperemia, sometimes with enlargement of cervical lymph nodes and a yellow exudate. Called also septic sore throat, streptococcal sore throat, and streptococcal tonsillitis.
