period of isovolumic contraction

period of isovolumic contraction
the first phase of ventricular systole, being the short period (0.5 second) lasting from atrioventricular valve closing to semilunar valve opening; as the muscle fibers contract, the ventricular pressure rises rapidly but the ventricular blood volume remains constant. See illustration at cardiac cycle, under cycle.
