brain natriuretic peptide
- brain natriuretic peptide
- B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) a hormone, originally isolated from porcine brain tissue, having biologic effects similar to those of atrial natriuretic peptide; it is stored mainly in the myocardium of the cardiac ventricles. Blood levels of BNP are elevated in hypervolemic states such as congestive heart failure and hypertension.
