pancreatitis with chronic abdominal pain, progressive fibrosis, and eventually irreversible loss of exocrine function (resulting in steatorrhea) and of endocrine function (resulting in diabetes mellitus). Recurrent attacks of acute pancreatitis are often superimposed, a condition known as chronic relapsing pancreatitis.
