ostium ileale

ostium ileale
[TA] ileal orifice: the opening at the junction of the ileum and cecum, which is rounded at the left (anterior) end and pointed at the right (posterior) end. It has two lips, one above and one below (TA, labrum ileocaecale and labrum ileocolicum). In a cadaver this is the site of the so-called ileocecal valve; in the living individual the ileum here forms a conical projection called the papilla ilealis. Called also o. ileocaecale or ileocecale, ileal opening, and ileocecal opening or orifice.
