- NADPH met·he·mo·glo·bin re·duc·tase (met-heґmo-glo″bin re-dukґtās) an enzyme of the erythrocytes that catalyzes the reduction of methemoglobin to hemoglobin via oxidation of NADH. The physiological significance of the enzyme is uncertain; no endogenous intermediate electron carrier has been found, although the enzyme can be activated if methylene blue or other artificial electron acceptor is introduced. Called also methemoglobin reductase (NADPH).
