eosinophilic myositis

eosinophilic myositis
1. a rare disorder characterized by proximal muscle weakness, myalgia, elevated muscle enzyme levels in the serum, electromyographic abnormalities, and eosinophilic infiltration of skeletal muscle and sometimes the viscera. It is occasionally associated with eosinophilic fasciitis or hypereosinophilic syndrome. Called also eosinophilic polymyositis. 2. inflammation of the muscles of mastication in dogs, especially large breeds such as German shepherds; it may be an autoimmune disorder. As the muscles swell, the animal has increased difficulty swallowing. Facial edema may also cause exophthalmos. 3. myositis of facial muscles in cattle, usually subclinical and found as a greenish discolored lesion of the meat after the animal is slaughtered.
